So it turns out that you can, for free, take the inter-island ferry between all the San Juan Islands that the ferry serves (which is four) (which is not all the San Juan Islands that there are) (which is a hundred and seventy-two).

You do, as it turns out, go past some of the islands that the ferry does not serve on your way to the ones that it does serve.

Other Islands

Which is to say that we took the ferry today to Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island its own self. Friday Harbor is the biggest city in the San Juans, and is, for some ENTIRELY MYSTERIOUS REASON, known as Sin City.

All we did was spend money, and eat, and drink. I have NO IDEA what they could be talking about.

After a scrumptious lunch, we immediately fell into a used bookstore called Serendipity.

Serendipity
Where we bought a few things.

Then we found an antique store, and a gorgeous Murano glass piece for Mark, and lovely grapefruit spoons for me:

Grapefruit Spoons

A friend told us about a great thrift store, where Mark found galoshes, and I found pants, plus the most MARVELOUS craft book from 1973 (I’ve been interested to learn tatting):

Handicrafts

After I’ve got tatting down, I can learn to make hats!

How To Make Hats

We finished the day with libations by the ferry landing.

Sin City Happy Hour

Sinful, sinful, from start to finish. We almost missed getting off the ferry at Orcas, we were so distracted by our delightful purchases. (And that would have sucked, as it was the last ferry of the day.) But we made it home, to an inn which had gotten VERY VERY COLD in our absence.

And there is still so much to do, but a day off was very nice. (I don’t know WHEN I’m going to find the time to learn tatting, but at least I have a book now!)

Thanks! We tried them this morning and they work GREAT! Almost as if they were, you know, designed to eat grapefruits with. ;-)

Hunh. Will you be able to take a day off when we're there? That sounds like fun...

Absolutely! In fact we were saying we'd like to take you guys over to Sin City. Many of the best restaurants (best-reviewed, anyway) are only open for dinner on the weekends. So we will secure some reservations.

I suppose you'll want to see the bookstore too. :-)

I've won international awards for my tatting. Give me a call when you get back into town and I'll give you a lesson. It's not that easy to grasp the initial flip of the knot. But once you get that you're on your way.

Ooh, I didn't know I knew anyone who tatted. But I love lace, and it sounds like a fun thing to learn. I will definitely take you up on that, thanks!
